Belstaff Trialmaster: The Very Muddy History of a Very British Motorcycle Jacket https://oracleoftime.com/belstaff-trialmaster-motorcycle-jacket/ https://oracleoftime.com/belstaff-trialmaster-motorcycle-jacket/#respond Sun, 28 Jul 2024 07:00:00 +0000 https://oracleoftime.com/?p=192295 A look at the history of the trailmaster motorcycle jacket and how it influenced British outdoor wear.]]>

Belstaff Jacket

In the world of motorsports, there are few disciplines as demanding as motorcycle trials. It’s a game of balance, precision, skill and endurance in which competitors must tackle obstacle-filled off-road courses while remaining rubber side down and riding as fast as possible. It’s not unusual for distances to hit triple digits, and here in the UK participants are often subjected to some pretty grim weather conditions to boot. To say suitable clothing is required would be an understatement. This is a sport that requires the toughest of the tough when it comes to kit, which is exactly what led Belstaff to design its now-legendary Trialmaster jacket more than 70 years ago.

From the perilous mountain passes of the Himalayas to the bustling city streets of London, the Trialmaster has since traversed them all. An icon of adventure, it has risen far above its moto-racing roots to become one of England’s most beloved outerwear designs. A quintessentially British spin on the classic motorcycle-jacket formula, favouring wax cotton in place of leather, press-stud bellows instead of chrome- zippered pockets and a mid-length cut to seal out the elements.

“Hardwearing, thornproof material; fungus, water and rot-proof; all exposed metal fittings are rustless,” as the jacket’s 1959 advertisement in The Motor Cycle magazine so eloquently put it. The Trialmaster’s roots can be traced back to World War I. Eli Belovitch and his son-in-law Harry Grosberg had spent several years supplying tents and groundsheets to the armed forces. After the conflict ended, they founded Belstaff: a portmanteau of Belovitch’s surname and his home county, Staffordshire.

Belovitch and Grosberg were pioneering textile hunters who travelled to all corners of the earth in search of the latest and greatest developments in fabric. It had long been Belovitch’s dream to apply his textile knowledge to motorcycle clothing, and Belstaff became an outlet for his experimental new ideas.

Belstaff Trialmaster Professional Jacket

It was in Egypt that Belovitch first got his hands on wax cotton. This ultra- durable fabric was lightweight, tough and abrasion resistant. Most interestingly to Belovitch, it was also waterproof and breathable – two qualities seldom found together in the days before Gore-Tex. Realising he had something special, he headed home and got to work crafting a new type of motorcycle jacket. Inspired by the Scottish Six Days Trial – the oldest and arguably most gruelling motorcycle event in the world – he eventually used his newfound wonder fabric to create his magnum opus.

“The weatherproof design provided a water-repellent, wind-resistant layer while remaining breathable to help regulate the wearer’s body temperature,” says Sean Lehnhardt-Moore, Creative Director of Belstaff. “Style signatures including the buckled throat latch collar, adjustable waist belt and the four-pocket silhouette were added to ensure the rider was comfortable and protected.

“The tilted chest pocket is probably the most recognisable feature. It was originally attached at an angle as a map pocket to provide easy access while on the bike. This has since become a design signature of Belstaff across the mainline and moto collections.”

Sammy Miller

When the Trialmaster launched, a young rider by the name of Sammy Miller was quickly rising through the moto-racing ranks. The 18-year-old British rider wrote to Belstaff in 1951 to ask if the company would like to sponsor him, and they accepted. Miller went on to wear Belstaff’s outerwear in upwards of 1,000 races, praising the Trialmaster for its ability to keep him bone dry when other competitors fell victim to the poor weather conditions.

“I was riding in the Scottish Six Days Trial and it rained for five of the six days,” he says. “Belstaff had sent me the green Trialmaster. It was a new design, a new product. I think I was the only dry bloke out of the 300 entries.” One particularly gruesome year came in 1964, when the notorious Scottish weather battered riders with howling wind and torrential rain for the duration of the event. The unrelenting downpour made parts of the course almost unrideable, turning small streams into raging torrents that were near impossible to cross.

Those who were there at the time recall a brave Miller revving up and attempting to jump one such section, only to land midstream in the fast-flowing waist-deep water. He attempted to power through with the carburettor below the water, but his engine died and he was forced to drag himself and his bike up the bank and back onto land to dry out. Unbelievably, he went on to win the event. “I rode better,” he says. “The rest of them were like drowned rats. I used to pray for rain. Softened them up. Easier to beat them.”

Father Graham Hullett 1968

Father Graham Hullett, leader of the 59 Club wearing a Belstaff Trialmaster jacket in 1968

Miller wasn’t the only high-profile biker to adopt the Trialmaster. Long before he became known as ‘Che’, a young Ernesto Guevara wore one while solo touring in Argentina on his motorcycle. Away from the road pioneering aviators Amelia Earheart and Amy Johnson both donned Belstaff outerwear for their respective record- breaking solo flights. And British intelligence officer Lawrence of Arabia famously wore the brand in the years between the end of World War I and his untimely death in 1935.

These household names helped to cement the Trialmaster’s reputation as a hardened piece of adventure clothing, but it was the jacket’s Hollywood adopters that brought it to mainstream attention and helped it to become recognised as a work of fashion rather than one purely of function.

During the 1960s and ‘70s, Steve McQueen was one of the biggest names on the planet. He’d starred in hit films The Great Escape, Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, and was often spotted wearing his signature Trialmaster. As a result, the jacket started to develop cult status in the world of celebrity, and over the years its list of notable wearers has grown to include the likes of Johnny Depp, David Beckham, George Clooney, Will Smith and Brad Pitt, to name just a few.

Today the Trialmaster is firmly established as one of the most significant outerwear designs of the last century. It’s up there with its transatlantic cousin the Schott Perfecto, the MA-1 bomber and the Burberry trench coat in terms of its influence and legacy. Respected by the menswear crowd and intrepid adventurers alike, it’s one of the few pieces of clothing that comfortably inhabits both worlds, bridging the gap between function and fashion.

“It’s an iconic design – quintessentially British with a classic silhouette that is rooted in functionality,” says Belstaff’s Lehnhardt-Moore. “The waxed cotton gives it an authentically worn-in feeling from the start, and it only gets better with age.”

Perfect Shoes for an Elegant Summer https://oracleoftime.com/shoes-for-an-elegant-summer/ https://oracleoftime.com/shoes-for-an-elegant-summer/#respond Wed, 17 Jul 2024 08:00:00 +0000 https://oracleoftime.com/?p=191365 A selection of smart and comfortable shoes for summer, ideal for warm weather, comfort and smart occasions. ]]>

Crockett & Jones Falmouth Khaki Suede

Summer isn’t just about rising temperatures, it’s also events season, with everything from regattas and sports to parties requiring you to be turned out appropriately. That throws a bit of a spanner in the works as, despite being the most breathable, comfortable shoes for the season, nobody wants to be that one guy in sandals at an elegant garden party. Fortunately, there are plenty of shoemakers out there creating summer-ready silhouettes that aren’t just comfortable, they’re stylish enough to build your entire smart-casual wardrobe around. Here are some of our favourites.

Mryqvist Brännö II Moss Green, £199

Mryqvist Brännö II Moss Green

Sometimes less is more – particularly in the heat – and the BRÄNNÖ from Swedish shoemaker Myrqvist is about as minimal as a summer loafer gets. It’s not just the unfussed, smoothly curvaceous silhouette of the Italian suede; it’s also unlined for a more breathable, comfortable fit. The sole is clean white rubber with a slightly raised heel, with a repeating M pattern doubling as extra grip for when those long summer days don’t actually last that long. The shoe’s available in a few colours but for our money the moss green offers a fresh alternative to the usual summer tans and pastels.

Available at Myrqvist.

Edward Green Montpellier Unlined, £1,120

Edward Green

If you’re after a serious investment piece you can do a lot worse than the perennially elegant saddle loafer – and a good deal worse than the superb examples from Jermyn Street icon Edward Green. Their latest take on the otherwise classical Montpellier is unlined for a lighter profile, but more importantly it makes the shoe slightly less stifling, perfect for the kind of warmer weather you’d want to bring the suede out in. Here that suede is in a raw umber, a nutty tan that’s both light and classically inclined. Pair with a light linen blazer for an elegant, warm weather look perfect for the Italian coastline.

Available at Edward Green.

Cheaney Drake Boat Shoe, £260

Cheaney Drake Boat Shoe

There are few summer styles more versatile than the boat shoe and, given that’s the very style that Cheaney’s best known for, it would be remiss not to include the historic British brand. Treading the line between formal and casual with its nautical combination of navy blue suede upper and pristine white rubber soles, the Drake is perfect for elevating your go-to shorts-and-polo look. And yes, that means you can wear them without socks, thanks to the soft leather and textile lining. If you don’t want to really hammer home the ‘boat’ in boat shoes, they’re also available in cognac, though we personally think it’s worth leaning in.

Available at Cheaney.

Crockett & Jones Falmouth Khaki Suede, £485

Crockett & Jones Falmouth Khaki Suede

While the Falmouth falls into the boat shoe catchall, it’s perhaps better described as a Derby loafer. That means it has laces and a slightly more structured silhouette, while keeping things low and comfortable. The boat shoe element is mainly in the sole, which is shiny and new to Crockett & Jones, with a wedge design and horizontal tread pattern. In a versatile khaki suede with brown sole and laces, they’re the ideal halfway house for someone that likes the look of loafers but needs a little extra security from their shoes. Pair with chinos, a breathable shirt and you can take the look anywhere.

Available at Crockett & Jones.

Harry’s London Wharf Loafer, £270

Harry’s London Wharf Loafer

Sure, this classic loafer in a light, denim blue has all the hallmarks of a summer classic, but you might find yourself wanting to wear them wherever and whenever you can. The textured rubber sole has plenty of grip, a Technogel insole offers superb comfort, and an internal lining keeps the entire construction durable enough to last season after season. The good news is that you can indeed wear them in inclement weather thanks to the protectively treated suede. They’re made in Italy, which suggests where you should be wearing them. Pair with light matching light blue linen and you’re good to go.

Available at Harry’s.

Luca Faloni Crew Neck

Well-chosen knitwear can be everything to all men as the weather starts to turn. It’s both warm and insulating while also forming the focal point of a look, but where should you start? If only there were some kind of ultimate guide to men’s knitwear you could refer to… Never fear, we are on hand to help. First, begin with the fabric. “The quality of yarn is so important, both for how it will feel when wearing it but also for a garment’s longevity”, says knitwear designer, Emily Grieves.

Then, decide on the garment’s weight, which both dictates how warm it’ll be and how you can style it. Lighter weight designs work great as layering options, while chunkier knits can replace jackets as legitimate pieces of outerwear. But don’t just take our word on the style potential of knitwear. Some of history’s best-dressed men have relied on the knit during the colder months of the year.

Steve Mcqueen Knitwear

Faye Dunaway & Steve McQueen

French actor Alain Delon preferred his with an open weave and a collar; John F Kennedy wore classic crew necks on his yacht and Steve McQueen had a wide range from cable knits to shawl collar cardigans. Which is the one for you? You’re in the right place.

Cardigan

Like all great items of clothing, the cardigan has links to the military. It was said to be based on the knitted waistcoats worn by British officers of the Crimean War, and named after major general James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan who fought in it. Despite these heroic associations, the cardigan has long been fighting its staid, overly preppy reputation. But this is the case no more, as many of the world’s coolest menswear brands have turned to the button-through design for their winter collections.

Part of the cardigan’s appeal is its versatility. It’s an item that can easily be dressed up, thanks to its more jacket-like design. Go for a chunky shawl collar cardigan and wear it with tailored trousers or chinos, a crisp Oxford shirt and suede desert boots. Or opt for a thinner merino or lambswool piece though and layer it over denim jeans, T-shirts and canvas trainers.

Son of a Tailor Cardigan

3D knitted as a single piece, this beautifully textured sweater balances an elegant silhouette with the cosy feel of much heavier knitwear.

Cable Knit

The cable knit, or Aran as it’s sometimes known, is defined by its textural weave, which is visible throughout the garment. A typically chunky piece, it originated around the turn of the 20th century, when it was designed for fishermen working around the Irish islands of Aran.

Traditional cable knits are fairly time- intensive to produce, while the knitted patterns can vary hugely, from simple ribbed lines through to more elaborate zig-zag styles. Look out for those with a fairly simple weave, made from a soft lambswool or cashmere blend. A more casual knit than most, cable knits are a natural pairing with denim jeans, commando sole leather boots and beanies.

Crew Neck

If you just want a simple knit with little embellishment or notable detailing, the crew neck is for you. This is knitwear at its most minimal. Crew necks come with a round neckline, knitted cuffs and hem, and a fine texture, making them both comfortable and incredibly easy to wear. As they are such a simple design, you could look to the fabric to make a point of difference.

Solid colour designs are commonplace, whether in classic navy, grey or black, but a number of brands also craft them out of more interesting fabrics, with flecks of colour and more open weaves giving plenty of texture. You don’t have to think about how to wear the crew neck. It’s the kind of piece you could just throw on over anything, from casual trousers and jeans through to smarter pleated pairs or even suit trousers.

Asket Merino Sweater

Luxury British style is New & Lingwood’s raison d’etre and that extends to knitwear as much as their signature dressing gowns. Case in point, this soft mustard crew neck.

Fisherman Knit

Although similar to the cable knit in that it was initially designed to keep seamen warm while at sea, the fisherman knit is different in a few ways. The most notable is the weave. It comes with a more minimal rib stitch, which is woven vertically down the garment. This makes it a chunky knit, like the cable, but with a cleaner, more understated look. It also typically comes with raglan shoulders and a slim hem opening, so it can be worn rolled.

If you’re looking for a fisherman knit, find one made from oiled wool, which hasn’t been dyed so the yarn still has its natural lanolin oils. For something more contemporary though, look out for merino wool or even cashmere, which are both softer against the skin.

Finisterre Mora Knit Jumper

Finisterre Mora Knit Jumper, £115

The Mora is Finisterre’s best-seller for a reason. The rib-stich uses almost double the yarn of a normal jumper, making it perfect for cold nights on or off the water.

Roll Neck

For ultimate warmth, look no further than the roll neck. This is a classic piece of knitwear design that’s been worn by everyone from James Dean to David Beckham. It comes with excess fabric at the neck, which is designed to be rolled over to protect the wearer’s neck from the cold. This is a design that can be smart or casual, depending on the fabric and the fit.

Go for something slim and made from a lightweight yarn like merino wool and you’ve got a sharp piece of knitwear that’s ideal for wearing with tailored trousers or even suits in the winter. Look for heavier designs made from chunky lambswool and you’ll find a robust, warm and comfortable piece of knitwear for the coldest months of the year.

Knitted Polo

The knitted polo has a certain relaxed elegance that’s missing in most other garments. It’s perhaps because of its collared front that mimics button up shirts. Or it might be in its closeness to the polo shirt, a style with plenty of sporting heritage. Either way, the knitted polo is an effortless, laid-back piece that’s also incredibly easy to dress up.

It usually comes with a fairly slim fit, as well as a knitted collar and a two or three button closure. You’ll find them in either lightweight merino wool, or slightly heavier lambswool or cashmere blends. Whatever you go for, if you want a smart casual, versatile piece of knitwear, this is the one for you.

Skydiamond

Whether they’re set in an elegant engagement ring or splashed liberally across an oversized watch case, there’s nothing like a diamond. Whether that’s because of their value, their glimmering attraction or their position as an unequivocal symbol of love, they’re precious stones in more ways than one. And yet, how we get them is often a lot less precious. Historically, diamonds have been mined, sourced and traded in less than savoury ways.

Blood diamonds funding warlords, exploitative production practices, the way we can get them can be both environmentally and socially destructive, with each mined diamond releasing up to 500kg of greenhouse gasses into the environment – a far cry from the symbol of love they often are. These days 1 in 3 mined diamonds come from Russia, which if you care about global politics is enough to make you think twice. But what if there was a way to create a diamond and not just leave the environment unharmed, but actively help it? It sounds too good to be true, but that’s precisely the magic behind Skydiamond.

Skydiamond

First, it’s worth asking what a diamond actually is. After all, it’s just layers of carbon, lined up in a specific way. How you get there is obviously different, whether it’s millions of years of underground pressure or grown in a lab, but the concept is the same, taking carbon and transforming it into something beautiful. At the same time, in case you hadn’t noticed, we have a problem with too much carbon in the atmosphere. So, why not take it from there?

This is the concept Dale Vince OBE, an entrepreneur and environmentalist you might better know as ‘Labour’s Green Knight’, struck upon while thinking of the most permanent way of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon. After all, nothing’s harder than diamond and, with the preciousness associated with the stones, there’s an innate value to the final result. Given that 36 percent of engaged men proposed with lab-grown diamonds last year, there’s also the demand.

Skydiamond
Skydiamond

And so, Skydiamond was founded in 2022. It’s not just a carbon-neutral production method, but it’s actively carbon negative, something the rest of the process adheres to – and it’s an incredibly cool process to boot.

Once the carbon dioxide has been taken from the atmosphere, it’s liquified and purified. Water is then split into oxygen and hydrogen via electrolysis, with the latter being combined with the C02 to make methane. This gas is then fed into a reactor where it’s subjected to temperatures of 900 – 1,200 degrees Celsius in balls of plasma. The whole thing takes around 14 days to produce a diamond, using nothing but solar and wind power.

Skydiamond

Now, granted there’s only a small amount of carbon trapped in each diamond. They’re incredibly dense, but not massive – a couple grammes are used to see each stone. But the fact remains that it’s carbon being captured and, perhaps more importantly, eliminating the need for mining. Why wreck the planet when you can have your diamond and wear it? Sure, there’s a certain stigma attached to lab-grown and non-mined diamonds, but that’s something we should be actively changing. When there’s no physical difference (Skydiamonds are graded and certified in exactly the same way as ‘natural’ stones) and it’s a choice between destructive and positive, there’s not much of a choice.

Diamonds have always been a symbol of love and forever shall they remain. But Skydiamond as a concept illustrates that you can represent your love, while loving the planet at the same time. If that’s not a win-win scenario, then nothing is. And maybe, just maybe, Skydiamond can lead the way to a better, more sustainable approach to diamonds as a whole.

Two very cool brands have come together to create a limited edition sunglasses capsule collection inspired by the joy of sporty droptop Porsches. The brands in question are Roveri, the eyewear specialists and Gunther Werks, an incredibly cool Porsche restomod and customisation brand.

GW have produced some seriously awesome cars such as the Speedster and have previously collaborated with the watch industry on projects like the 901 GW Chronograph. Together, GW and Roveri have created the ultimate sunglasses for cruising along with the top down in the low evening sunlight.

The glasses are designed with open-air driving in mind, which is why they have relatively large lenses that are both wide and tall to protect the eyes from buffeting winds. Similarly, they have a secure bridge and top bar to keep them firmly on your face.

While they’re fairly large, they’re also incredibly comfortable because the frames are made from a combination of UDCT carbon fibre and beta-titanium, lightweight and strong materials that find usage in both the motoring and watchmaking industries.

Roveri Eyewear X Gunther Works Carbon Noire

Producing the Roveri Eyewear x Gunther Werks frames takes over 150 individual carbon fibre layers that are machined using a CNC machine and each set takes over 240 hours to make. This production technique means that each pair is totally unique due to the striations of the carbon.

Adding further individuality is the fact there are two versions available. The Sterling Bronze features brown lenses while The Carbon Noire is black, both are suitably stylish and match the modern sportiness of the Gunther Werks cars they’re inspired by.

Roveri Eyewear X Gunther Works Carbon Noire

In addition to the glasses themselves, the limited edition comes with a Gunther Werks branded box featuring Alcantara leather case, card holder, authenticity cards and a decorative carbon block. The carbon block is the actual block of material that the glasses were produced from and now serves as a form of small commemorative sculpture.

Both versions of the Roveri Eyewear x Gunther Werks collaboration are priced at £749. So it’s a great accessory to go with your Gunther Werks vehicle or as something a little more aspirational since a Gunther Werks costs, well, a little bit more than the glasses. As a limited edition, there’re very exclusive as well.

When you first read about Skydiamond it sounds like science fiction. Essential Sports Inspired Jackets: The Coach, Varsity, and Harrington https://oracleoftime.com/sports-jackets-coach-varsity-harrington/ https://oracleoftime.com/sports-jackets-coach-varsity-harrington/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://oracleoftime.com/?p=159587 The Coach jacket, the Varsity jacket and the Harrington jacket are three wardrobe staples that share their origins on the sports field. ]]>

Coach Jackets Straight Outta Compton

Jackets are the Swiss Army knife of the wardrobe, versatile, practical and cool. It goes without saying that there are as many styles of jacket as there are reasons to wear one so breaking down every possible style is an impossible task. Instead, let’s focus on three that, to a certain extent, have a shared origin on the sports field. So here are three sport-inspired jackets you need in your wardrobe: the Coach Jacket, Varsity Jacket and Harrington Jacket.

The Coach Jacket

Coach Jacket History NWA

The first two styles of sport inspired jackets share plenty of history. Both coach and varsity jackets boast close associations with baseball and American football. Coach jackets were typically worn by the team’s head and assistant coaches, hence the name, and consisted of a few key design traits. Cut with a mid-length that extends just below the hips, coach jackets traditionally come with a snap button front, twin side pockets and a drawstring hem. Made from cotton or a polyester blend, the style was designed to keep the coaching staff warm and dry on the sidelines.

The jackets would feature the team’s insignia and colours, with logos appearing on the chest and back, leaving not so subtle hints as to which team you were repping. The latter is a big part in the coach’s jacket’s broader appeal. The world of hip hop embraced the style in the 1990s, with NWA designing their own uniform consisting of snapback caps, gold chains and black coach jackets with their logo and names on.

The Varsity Jacket

Varsity Jackets

It was the players of America’s high school and college teams that arguably got the better deal when it came to jackets. Indeed, the varsity jacket is one of the most iconic outerwear styles of all and is certainly the most emblematic of the USA. Its origins began all the way back in 1865, when Harvard University’s baseball team sewed a large H onto the front of their sweatshirts, proudly displaying their allegiance to the Ivy League institution.

Other schools cottoned on and by the turn of the century every major college sports team started giving ‘letterman’ sweaters out to its players. Cardigans began to be de rigueur, which moved the letter to the chest, before button up jackets took a hold. By the 1930s, the style we know today was born, with its short, boxy cut, wool fabric and leather arms making it unique among light outerwear, while its patches, letters and insignias repped the colours of one’s team. The style is among the most replicated of any piece of clothing, with brands like The Golden Bear and Ebbets Field Flannels producing authentic reproduction pieces, and the likes of Burberry and Off White being known for their luxurious takes.

The Harrington Jacket

Elvis Preseley James Dean Harrinton Jacket

Less talked about is the Harrington jacket. It flies more under the radar, given it’s usually made from muted tones of navy, black, or at a push, beige, and it lacks any bold lettering, logos or contrast piping. But this jacket might be the coolest of the lot. Beginning life in the 1930s, it was originally designed by British brand Baracuta as golf wear; its short, boxy design and raglan sleeves allowing for an impressive range of movement. It was waterproof, made from the brand’s light, rain-resistant cotton, and came with a distinctly British tartan lining for a subtle touch of flair. It’s defined by its funnel neck collar, which can be buttoned up for added wind resistance, its slanted side pockets and elasticated cuffs and hem.

Steve McQueen Harrinton Jacket

The Harrington was an instant hit, and upon being exported to the States was worn by none other than Elvis Presley in the 1958 film, King Creole. Two years earlier, James Dean wore a bright red Harrington in Rebel Without a Cause, and although not a Baracuta, displayed the potential of this burgeoning style. It would later be worn by Steve McQueen, who favoured a stone Baracuta, before it starred in the 1960s TV show Peyton Place, where character Rodney Harrington wore it throughout, giving the jacket its name.

The Harrington has never lost its mid-century appeal. As far as an easy, comfortable and practical jacket you can just throw on at a moment’s notice, it’s hard to beat. But then that’s true of all of these sportswear staples. Once niche products designed for a specific few, these classic pieces combine perfectly with denim jeans, T-shirts and polos. They are the tool watches of outerwear, with their functional detailing, simple designs and easy to style versatility.

Baracuta G9 Harrington

Reclaim Formal Style with the Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase https://oracleoftime.com/ettinger-heritage-burlington-briefcase/ https://oracleoftime.com/ettinger-heritage-burlington-briefcase/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2023 08:00:00 +0000 https://oracleoftime.com/?p=158255 The Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase is gorgeously crafted and sharp as a tack, ideal for the modern formal businessman. ]]>

Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase

In this age of ever more casual wardrobes, where slinging on a luxurious hoody is enough to count as workwear, sometimes it’s satisfying to go back to the formal days of yore. Think of the classical businessman, what comes to mind? A sharp suit of course, likely a three-piece, and an impeccably knotted tie as a given. But what really finishes the look, the one thing that’s become shorthand for traditional professionalism, is an attaché case. And when it comes to the not-so- humble attaché case, think Ettinger.

The British leather specialist’s been working in London since the first half of the 20th century, so classical pieces are very much their forte, whether it’s their recent collaboration with William Morris or their fine leather watch rolls (I’ll give you three guesses why we like them). Bags, however, are where those decades of expertise shine. Briefcase in point, the Heritage Burlington.

Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase
Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase

As the name suggests, the Heritage Burlington is very much on the classical end of the spectrum, an ode to the bygone era of bowler hats on bankers. That means a sleek, sophisticated silhouette in a gorgeous, dark, nut- coloured leather. It is available in a lighter brown or more formal black, but the oxbloody-adjacent nut is the perfect backdrop for Ettinger’s signature golden brass lock clasp. It doesn’t just say you’re in business; it says you’re doing bloody well at it.

The leather itself is full-grain Buttero, which alongside being tactile in the extreme, shows natural variations from briefcase to briefcase. This makes each bag individual from the get-go and all the more so once the leather takes on the patina of age. It won’t be long before the heritage design’s indistinguishable from a carefully kept vintage original.

Ettinger Heritage Burlington Briefcase

From a practical standpoint, the Heritage Burlington has one main gusset with enough room for a laptop, papers and the like, but one that when it’s not full, keeps relatively svelte. So that your recently signed contracts don’t get voided by poor packing and a hefty Macbook, there’s also two A4 slip pockets, one inside and one outside. Both are lined with Ettinger’s gold monogrammed jacquard fabric for that stealthy flash of luxury that denotes serious craftsmanship.

Yes, laptop bags and rucksacks have eclipsed the traditional briefcase in the main, and in many ways they’re a lot more practical. But there will always be a special sartorial place for the attaché case – with Ettinger’s Heritage Burlington very near the top of that refined business pantheon.
