Bernard Favre Black Rings Watch Winder, CHF 1,590 (approx. £1,425)

Bernard Favre Black Rings Watch Winder

A watch winder is often as much a decorative object as it is a practical one, and the Bernard Favre planetary winders demonstrate that perfectly. With rotating rings like an armillary sphere, it makes for a spectacular view as it keeps your watch topped up on power. The double-axis motion also prevents one of the perceived issues of watch winders, the fact that a constant rotation on a single axis puts uneven strain on the movement, which can damage it.

Available at Bernard Favre.

Bennett Winch Triple Watch Roll, £685

Bennett Winch Triple Watch Roll
Bennett Winch Triple Watch Roll

Keeping your watches safe while you transport them is important and the Bennett Triple Watch Roll is ideal for keeping a trio of timepieces protected. It’s handmade in London with panels of Tuscan leather arranged around an ultra-durable yet flexible Kevlar core. Cushioning the watches on the inside is an Alcantara suede lining, providing a soft protective layer. When closed, the structure becomes rigid, preventing the watches from getting crushed or damaged. It’s available in brown or black, offering classic and refined appearances with a distinctive hexagonal shape.

Johnsons of Lichfield Winder Safe

What’s the biggest nightmare of any serious watch collector? I wake up every night having dreamt of being Mufasa-ed by a Snoopy MoonSwatch stampede. But less specifically watch lovers all have much the same greatest fear: theft. Not to worry anyone, but if you add up the value of all your watches, it makes an incredibly tempting target for any opportunistic break-ins.

At best, it’s an incredibly frustrating situation that costs more time and effort to recoup than anyone would want to expend. Just look at what Orlando Bloom went through to get his collection back from the notorious Bling Ring. And as most of us aren’t Hollywood actors, it’s more likely that you’ve just lost some truly irreplaceable timepieces that you will in fact never see again.

Johnsons of Lichfield
Johnsons of Lichfield

Obviously, you don’t need to sit there and accept the risk – and you don’t need some elaborate Indiana Jones-esque trap system either. You need a safe. You probably don’t need us to tell you that you need a safe, you know it already. You might even have one already, in which case well done, you’re a responsible watch owner.

But having a tiny lockbox stashed in a cupboard does not a proper safe make. If you’re looking for something seriously heavyweight – both figuratively and literally – then you could do a lot worse than Johnson’s of Lichfield.

Johnsons of Lichfield

Nestled in scenic Staffordshire in the centre of England, family-run Johnson’s of Lichfield have been keeping their customers’ valuables safe (ba-dum-TSH) and sound for nearly 35 years. That’s long enough to not only know what they’re talking about, but to have become the UK’s leading experts in the field.

That expertise is vital. Finding the right safe for you isn’t just a case of picking one out online and shoving it in a corner. First, there are all the boring technicalities you need to think about. Does it adhere to my insurance policy? Can the floor you’re planning to put it on actually support it? Does it even fit properly when fully installed? Given that every safe is different, getting those answers can be easier said than done.

Johnsons of Lichfield

Then of course, there’s the aesthetics of the thing. Just because a safe is a practical necessity for a treasure trove of timepieces doesn’t mean you have to make do with a nondescript industrial block. In fact, the best of them can be genuinely lovely pieces of interior design – if you know where to look.

To address the former point, Johnson’s of Lichfield is a lot more than just a retailer, working more like a home security concierge. Like building a bespoke watch, the process is more discussion than transaction, where the experts at Johnson’s of Lichfield will discuss your exact needs in detail. It goes beyond safes too; vaults, gun safes, even panic rooms, whatever kind of security you need and to whatever scale.

Johnsons of Lichfield

That versatility is paired with an approach to luxury design that epitomises the statuesque nature of most of these security solutions. We’re not talking some tinny block with a cheap keypad. Sleek, glossy black finishing, chrome hardware, the kind of tactile, mechanical satisfaction that’s as solid as you’d expect from a luxury safe, there’s a lot to love. All custom, of course.

Johnsons of Lichfield

There’s even more to love specifically for your watch collection as, along with more basic watch holders, there’s the option to install watch winders, too. The best specialist watch winders allow custom winding settings to suit every watch. You can select your preferred holding position, rotations a day and the turning direction, all simply and succinctly through the exterior touchpad. Yes, there’s still some debate among collectors as to whether a winder is actually good for your watch or not, but having the option to never have to set a perpetual calendar again is a tempting prospect.

Johnsons of Lichfield

The necessity for some hefty watch security is a little worrying and safes as a subject aren’t exactly Philippe Dufour levels of sexy (the watches rather than the maker). But Johnson’s of Lichfield’s bespoke approach to the subject might just get you more excited about safes than you ever thought possible.

One half of the husband-and-wife duo behind the Struthers label, Rebecca’s literary labour of love is a tour de force discussing the history of timekeeping, our relationship with time and how watches and clocks have shaped our world.

Don’t worry though, it’s not some dense, impenetrable tome. At a spritely 288 pages, it’s paced to move and yet still manages time to offer up some quirky stories, and things that even we here at Oracle Time didn’t know. In the words of inimitable British legend Stephen Fry, ‘An exquisite book, beautifully put together… What a very wonderful book.’

Inkdial Omega Speedmaster Professional x Astronaut Snoopy and Woodstock – Set of 3 Art Prints, £200

Inkdial Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Art Print Trio

If you caught our last design issue you’d have noticed some phenomenal sketches of some iconic elements of iconic watches. Well, they were hand-drawn by Ben Li, better known as Inkdial. The prolific artist is a go-to for all things horological, creating incredibly detailed sketches of everything from Omega to Patek to A. Lange & Sohne. What we have here is an awesome set of three different pieces all themed around the Speedy Silver Snoopy which makes for a fun, eye-catching triptych.

As the artist himself puts it: “The Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy trio features Snoopy and Woodstock daydreaming on top of the dog house in the first piece and gradually achieving their dream of reaching the stars in the final piece. This illustration trio set ‘on and off’ has taken me a total of three years to complete and I am ‘over the moon’ to finally showcase them together.”

Available at Inkdial.

Berd Vay’e Horosphere, from $3,900

Berd Vay e Horosphere

Ever wondered where all the leftover parts from old movements go? Well, here’s your answer. Berd Vay’e’s awe- inspiring sculptures are like nothing else out there, spheres, cubes and veritable walls of glass suspending hundreds of vintage watch parts in an explosion of horological art.

They’re absolutely mesmerising and a phenomenal showcase of the delicacy of fine watches. Of the collection though, the Horosphere is a stand-out. Available in a number of sizes from desk ornament to interior design statement, the 360-degree view of the parts is like nothing else out there, a crystal ball of glorious watch geekiness. What’s not to love?

Available at Berd Vay’e.

Wolf The Rocket Watch Winder, £599

Wolf The Rocket Watch Winder

Keeping your watch wound – particularly if it’s a complication like a calendar – can be a massive pain, particularly if you just want to slap it on your wrist and be able to tell the time. A winder not only solves that little issue, but can help keep your watch healthy by not letting it stagnate.

Think of it in the same vein as a classic car that needs to be driven to stay, well, driveable. The Rocket is Wolf’s signature winding system distilled into a handy travel size – the world’s smallest travel winder, in fact. It’s an easy addition to your suitcase wherever you’re heading and, even if you don’t have itchy feet, makes for a nice, svelte winder to keep on your bedside table at home. The fact that it’s a cool, sleek piece of watch tech is the icing on the cake.

Available at Wolf.

Lorenzi Milano Watch Repair Kit, €665 (approx. £575)

Lorenzi Milano Watch Repair Kit

Should you decide that yes, you can service your own watch without destroying it, the next step is to get yourself a tool kit. There are plenty out there, with increasingly intense sets of tools, electronic gizmos, and professional standard sensors, but all you really need is this streamlined set, containing a magnifying lens, watch knife, tweezers, screwdrivers and a brush.

This also happens to be one of the best- looking sets out there. No DIY-style hard case, just a sleek box of soft Nappa leather and plenty of Italian flair. It’s both stylish and practical, something that’s harder to achieve than repairing a tourbillon.

Available at Lorenzi Milano.

Watch Supply Watchmaking Experience, from £329

Watch Supply Watchmaking Experience

If you want to stop watching from the sidelines and get hands-on with a movement or two yourself, you should probably get a bit of guidance while you do it. Nobody wants a permanently half- assembled movement on their hands. Watch Supply’s masterclass scratches that watchmaking itch nicely, offering two different courses (one for standard watches, another for GMTs) that both allow you to build a custom watch from the company’s extensive range of built-it-yourself kits.

It’s not as intensive as a true watchmaking masterclass of course, but if you want to dip your toe into the murky waters of horology, then this is a fantastic start. And getting your own watch out of it – a watch that you’ve built yourself – makes for a great reminder of a great day. Just make sure you book in plenty of time as dates sell out fast.

Available at Watch Supply.

L’Epee 1839 Time Fast II Chrome, CHF 43,500 (approx. £39,300)

L’Epee 1839 Time Fast II Chrome

Plenty of ink has been spilled diving into the parallels between cars and watches – perhaps too much, given that the relationship can be very succinctly summed up in this single, singular table clock. A celebration of the iconic racing lines of the 1960s, back when gentleman racers were still de rigueur, the aluminium H-chassis is built around an intricate clockwork mechanism – a GPHG Winning mechanism at that in the Mechanical Clock category – where the steering wheel sets the time, the gear stick sets the winding mode (wound using the rear wheels), and the driver’s helmet is set on top of the escapement.

It’s inspired. Not only does it look cool, it’s a serious piece of mechanical engineering, with a full eight-day power reserve, meaning you only need to remember to wind it once a week. Though honestly, you’ll want to play with it a bit too often, so a reminder won’t be needed.

Available at L’Epee.

Here are 6 of the best.]]>

Kross Studio x Star Wars Tie Advanced X1 Watch Winder

While there’s still some debate over whether constantly keeping your watch movement is a good thing or not, we’re inclined to say that it’s no bad thing. The best-condition classic cars are the ones that still get regularly used after all and the bottom line is anything that avoids the need to set your watch every few days when you want to switch it up is good in our book. That said, there’s a lot of difference between a basic watch winder, something that just jiggles your automatic rotor around, and something altogether more impressive, like these 6 luxury watch winders.

You don’t want your prize Nautilus to slum it in a featureless blank box on your sideboard; you want a piece of craftsmanship that lives up to the watch inside. Fine leathers, sculptural design, tech designed to keep your watch wear-ready at a moment’s notice, these are the best luxury watch winders around right now. And hey, if you end up spending more on winders than watches, that’s fine too. They’re just that cool.

Modalo Showtime 3 Piece Carbon, £439.50

Modalo Showtime 3 Piece Winder Carbon

While Modalo offer a more classical approach to watch winders on the whole with elegantly laid-out, generally fuss-free quality, the Showtime dials up the performance aspect to new heights with a full carbon fibre front. It’s not all front either; the trio of winders can all be set separately, meaning that you can customise the speed to fit the watch, invaluable if you have a particularly delicate high complication piece one end, a rugged sports watch with a high power reserve the other. The rest of the construction is made from solidly luxurious high gloss wood from New Zealand, making it the closest thing to a luxury modern Bentley dashboard you can get in a winder.

Available at Modalo.

Swisskubik Startbox, £450

Swisskubik Startbox Winder

Luxury watch winders aren’t normally something you’d consider fun. That’s until you get a bright splash of pop art colour courtesy of Swiss KubiK. The brand’s an expert at turning what would be a dull box in less assured hands into something with much more aesthetic punch – and nothing punches quite as hard as this bright turquoise. With a soft touch surface its also surprisingly tactile, making for the kind of summery watch winder that you’ll actually enjoy using. That’s not something you can say about most winders. And yes, it pairs pretty immaculately with anything in Tiffany blue.

Available at Swisskubik.

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor Racing Watch Holder, £550

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor Racing Orange

What’s life without a bit of contrast? Or a watch winder for what matter. As the name suggests, the Rotor Racing collection from Italian winder specialists Scatola del Tempo takes their cool, minimal Rotor One and updates it through a petrolhead lens. That means a striking high contrast look in orange and black that’ll match a McLaren nicely. If you want to update the look, you can also opt for one of the Rotor collection’s signature interchangeable bezels. Hulk green to highlight the orange perhaps? Either way, the winder is completely autonomous with a three-year battery life, so feel free to stow it in its spiritual home in the garage next to your car.

Available at Sctola Del Tempo.

Orbit Winder Piano Black, £1,334

Orbit Winder Co. Orbit Winder

Part sculptural masterpiece, part gyroscopic carnival ride, the Orbit is one of the few watch winders that goes well beyond a tech-driven box. Designed and handmade in Finland, it’s a serious statement piece, but one that also offers an incredible 360-degree view of the watch inside. Sure, it’s not particularly efficient like a multi-watch box would be, but when it looks this good, what’s a little impracticality? Not that the winding system isn’t impeccable of course. The multi-directional movement mimics the movement of a watch on the wrist, giving it the most natural winding experience possible in the most out-of-this-world way.

Available at Orbit.

Wolf British Racing 4pc, £1,955

Wolf British Racing 4pc Winder

While this black box is about as aesthetically stripped back as possible, this combination of black and gunmetal lets the finer details do the talking, whether that’s the Rolex-esque fluted bezels around each of its four watch holders, or the superlative winding technology behind it. Each winder has an obsessive amount of rotation options and can be set anywhere between 300 and 1,200 turns per day, each of which are counted individually rather than estimated (as most winders are wont to do). The mechanism is even designed to stop your watch being overwound. There’s a reason WOLF is the big dog of watch winders.

Available at Wolf.

Kross Studio Tie Advanced X1 Watch Winder, CHF 2,500 (approx. £2,280)

6 of the Best Luxury Watch Winders

Yes, this is Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter as a watch winder, which is to say we’d happily turn to the dark side to get this on our shelves. Created by Kross Studio, the designer behind the recent run of Lucasfilm-endorsed Star Wars timepieces devoted to the Death Star and Slave II (Boba Fett’s ship), this scaled-down fighter swaps out the cockpit for a single watch winder. There are plenty of winding options you can adjust via Bluetooth and the battery life is a solid two years. It’s not quite hyperspace levels of cutting- edge, but as winders go there’s nothing else quite like it

Available at Kross Studio.

Orbit Winder Co. Orbit Winder, £1,300

Orbit Winder Co. Orbit Winder

On a functional level watch winders are designed to keep your automatic watches wound, however they also serve as a form of display case. Orbit Winders embraces this duality with a gyroscopic structure that emulates a tourbillon. The smooth and silent motion is both visually spectacular and healthier for your watch than a traditional winder. That’s because by rotating on multiple axis it causes less wear and strain on the movement compared to being locked into a single plane. There are three versions available: Piano Black, Walnut and Birch, all crafted by hand.

Available at Orbit Winder.

Forstner Bands, $125 (Approx. £100)

Forstner Bands

Komfit Everyone knows that the Omega Speedmaster is the iconic space watch, but are you familiar with the most iconic space watch strap? Jean Rousseau Calanques Alligator Strap, £470

Jean Rousseau Calanques Alligator Strap

French watch strap specialist Jean Rousseau brings luxury to straps of all kinds, including those designed for use with Apple Watches. The Calanques alligator double wrap strap, available with shiny or semi-matte finish, is a gentle turquoise colour inspired by the iconic Calanques of Marseille, a beautiful coastal cliff area akin to a Mediterranean fjord. The shade of turquoise used here is reminiscent of the incredibly popular Tiffany blue.

Available at Jean Rousseau.

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor One Black Watch Winder, £530

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor One Black

Keeping your watches in good condition while you travel with them requires careful thought. One solution is a portable watch winder like the Scatola del Tempo Rotor One Black, which is their best selling winder. Automotive Inspired Watch Winders for Every Budget

With automotive season fast approaching – both figuratively and literally – how about a winder to reflect the obsession for all things mechanical us watch lovers share with the petrolheads of the world? From racing red leather to aerodynamic shells, the choice is yours. Or at least, your wallet’s. Because let’s be fair, if you’ve not tried a watch winder before, you might want to dip your toe in first. Here then are the coolest automotive inspired watch winders for every budget.

WOLF British Racing Green Six-piece Watch Winder, £2,829

WOLF British Racing Green Six-piece Watch Winder

The classic combo of gold and green is as appealing as ever in winder form, particularly when said green echoes the golden age of British racing in a way that should see Sir Stirling Moss make an appearance. Though the vegan friendly, pebble-grained leather is a distinctly modern twist. It’s contrasted with fluted borders to the winding apertures ripped straight off a Rolex Cellini for an inimitable dash of glamour.

Equipped with space for six watches, the winders themselves are among the most advanced out there, despite the classical surrounds. WOLF’s are the only winders which count the exact number of rotations rather than an estimate. They also let you factor in the power reserve left in the watch, meaning there’s no risk of over-winding. Pair that with more customisable settings than a Savile Row tailor and you have one of the best winders around.

Available at WOLF.

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor One Red, €495

Scatola Del Tempo Rotor One Red

If you need a winder for a single watch, it’s more likely that you want a place to show off your grail piece than actually needing to keep it wound. Most of us can keep up with winding a single watch. Whatever the case may be however, Scatola del Tempo’s entry-level single watch winder is a fitting vessel in which to preserve your piece, especially if you happen to have the matching Rolex.

Pepsi Cola GMT Bezel aside, this high octane take on the Italian brand’s seminal Rotor One is draped in racing red livery with a tactile, soft touch finish as suited to a classic car interior as a winder. Mechanically it’s one of the simpler winders out there but for good reason: the streamlined, battery powered winder will last you for up to three years without any need to replace. If there’s a better travel partner for your grail watch, we’ve yet to find it.

Available at Scatola Del Tempo.

Infinite Italy UNICO 3, €2,290

Infinite Italy UNICO 3

Wish your geartrain could wind your watches? Wish granted, courtesy of Italian studio Infinite Italy. The UNICO range is a collection of 1-, 2- and 3-watch winders where the box has been stripped away entirely, right down to a cog turning at the base of each watch. For the mechanically minded, this is it. Of the set, the 3-watch version has by far the most impact, with all three cogs and the watches on them turning in unison. It’s mesmerising.

There’s an LCD display on the back and a remote control for changing the various settings, but honestly the UNICO feels like it should be hand cranked. Sure, the lack of a box means dust can get to the watches, but the unobstructed view is worth it, especially if you have a Royal Oak-level bracelet.

Available at Infinite Italy.

Rapport London Formula Duo Watch Winder, £795

Rapport London Formula Duo Watch Winder

Nothing says high performance quite like carbon fibre, the material de choix of hypercar designers and adrenaline junkies the world over. Or in this case, arguably the UK’s most innovative creator of avant garde watch winders. While the Formula Duo doesn’t have quite the same visual impact as, say, Rapport’s Time Capsule, it’s a good deal more practical and, let’s be honest, accessible – and I mean that in both price and style.

The regular pattern of the carbon fibre will suit most modern interiors nicely. Lined with soft velvet and equipped with an LCD screen to adjust not only the winders but the interior lighting, you can choose how you display your perfect pairing of, ideally, modern racing chronographs. And of course, you can lock it. After all, for everyone bar you, looking is better than touching.

Available at Rapport London.

MJJ Exclusive Armoured in Luxury Safe, from £37,400

MJJ Exclusive Armoured in Luxury Safe
MJJ Exclusive Armoured in Luxury Safe

Ever demanded the watch winding equivalent of a bulletproof Rolls-Royce? This is the one for you. Custom watch and jewellery specialist MJJ Exclusive know what their clientele need and apparently it’s a (up to) 12 watch winder surrounded by a sleekly designed, heavy-duty sheet of armour. Hard and impenetrable as the outside is though, the inside is lined with sumptuous quilted leather straight out of the nearest Roller. Tech-wise, this safe has it all.

Each of the 12 winders can be individually set, allowing you to customise the winding speed of each of your watches. When we’re talking about high complications – as befits a safe of this stature – that genuinely matters. Sealed by a six-digit pin code with a million possible combinations and the kind of attention to detail you expect from the jeweller and watch customiser to the elite, this is about as high-end as a winder can get. And as heavy.

Available at MJJ Exclusive.

Modalo Watch Winder Sport 4, €1,427.73

Modalo Watch Winder Sport 4

While this intense watch winder might well look like a cross-section of the next land speed record holder, it’s aerodynamic shape is more sculptural than practical. That said, the fourth generation of Modalo’s incredible Sport winder pushes the technical envelope, with a fingerprint lock, touch screen display and the kind of ease of use you would expect from any decent dashboard.

Designed for four watches – with plenty of space between them for the perfect aesthetic display – it’s specifically kitted out to hold heavy timepieces, meaning big, chunky chronographs with equally macho bracelets. It’s definitely not the kind of watch winder meant to blend into the background; this is a tour de force more unmissable than a blacked-out Lamborghini.

Available at Modalo.

Erwin Sattler building

When we think about horology, we immediately think about the miniscule feats of engineering and precision calibres created by the Swiss masters like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. However, horology can also be big, bold and German, as Erwin Sattler likes to show.

Their philosophy is really start as you mean to go on and that can’t be clearer than when you approach their manufacture outside of Munich. You are immediately greeted by the building’s façade which houses a 12m high precision pendulum clock with an enormous 8m pendulum, swinging slowly back and forth with the inexorable march of time. It’s the largest precision pendulum clock in the world and you can’t make a bigger statement than that.

Erwin Sattler watchwinder

Stepping inside you’ll find a world of exotic and highly precise timepieces ranging from pendulum clocks that are accurate to within 1-2 seconds per month to marine chronometers mounted on rotating gimbles to wall size watch winders that can house up to 60 wristwatches at a single time. Most of which can also be found for sale on their website to some degree. It’s a connoisseur’s dream.

Erwin Sattler pendulum clocks

All this is made possible by Erwin Sattler’s understanding that they are creating artefacts that are designed to outlive them, multi-generational heirlooms that need to operate with the same amount of accuracy for decades. Their larger timepieces use brass plates 5mm thick to provide excellent sturdiness and create the groundwork for longevity with 90% of all Erwin Sattler production completed in-house.

But while Erwin Sattler are perhaps best known for their handmade clocks – pendulum, table or otherwise – they also have a small collection of wristwatches that they describe as pendulum clocks for on the go. As you might expect, they have a penchant for regulator complications, a function that separates the hour, minute and second hands onto individual dials to allow for precision time reading. It’s a complication that allows you to accurately set the time of a second timepiece, such as… a pendulum clock perhaps.

Erwin Sattler table clock

Nowadays pendulum and table clocks seem a bit archaic and are no longer the essential piece of furniture they used to be, so the argument could be made that Erwin Sattler are slightly out of touch. However, their designs are chic and modern with open work cases and dials showing the inner workings of their mechanisms and captivating the eye, keeping them relevant and exciting.

They’re more than simple nostalgia trips and are serious centrepiece artworks. Not to mention the precision pendulum clocks can be fitted with safes and watch winders to make them a totem of luxury within your home. There’s also the added benefit that every timepiece created by Erwin Sattler is highly exclusive because they are produced in limited series due to the handcrafting process.
