What’s the biggest nightmare of any serious watch collector? I wake up every night having dreamt of being Mufasa-ed by a Snoopy MoonSwatch stampede. There are a handful of books that every collector should have in their library, but none have had a more recent impact than Hands of Time by watchmaker Rebecca Struthers. One half of the husband-and-wife duo behind the Struthers label, Rebecca’s literary labour of love is a tour de force discussing the history of timekeeping, our relationship with time and how watches and clocks have shaped our world.

Don’t worry though, it’s not some dense, impenetrable tome. At a spritely 288 pages, it’s paced to move and yet still manages time to offer up some quirky stories, and things that even we here at Oracle Time didn’t know. Inkdial Omega Speedmaster Professional x Astronaut Snoopy and Woodstock – Set of 3 Art Prints, £200

If you caught our last design issue you’d have noticed some phenomenal sketches of some iconic elements of iconic watches. Well, they were hand-drawn by Ben Li, better known as Inkdial. The prolific artist is a go-to for all things horological, creating incredibly detailed sketches of everything from Omega to Patek to A. Lange & Sohne. What we have here is an awesome set of three different pieces all themed around the Speedy Silver Snoopy which makes for a fun, eye-catching triptych.

As the artist himself puts it: “The Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy trio features Snoopy and Woodstock daydreaming on top of the dog house in the first piece and gradually achieving their dream of reaching the stars in the final piece. This illustration trio set ‘on and off’ has taken me a total of three years to complete and I am ‘over the moon’ to finally showcase them together.”

Plenty of ink has been spilled diving into the parallels between cars and watches – perhaps too much, given that the relationship can be very succinctly summed up in this single, singular table clock. A celebration of the iconic racing lines of the 1960s, back when gentleman racers were still de rigueur, the aluminium H-chassis is built around an intricate clockwork mechanism – a GPHG Winning mechanism at that in the Mechanical Clock category – where the steering wheel sets the time, the gear stick sets the winding mode (wound using the rear wheels), and the driver’s helmet is set on top of the escapement.

It’s inspired. Not only does it look cool, it’s a serious piece of mechanical engineering, with a full eight-day power reserve, meaning you only need to remember to wind it once a week. Though honestly, you’ll want to play with it a bit too often, so a reminder won’t be needed.

Pepsi Cola GMT Bezel aside, this high octane take on the Italian brand’s seminal Rotor One is draped in racing red livery with a tactile, soft touch finish as suited to a classic car interior as a winder. Wish your geartrain could wind your watches? Wish granted, courtesy of Italian studio Infinite Italy. The UNICO range is a collection of 1-, 2- and 3-watch winders where the box has been stripped away entirely, right down to a cog turning at the base of each watch. For the mechanically minded, this is it. Of the set, the 3-watch version has by far the most impact, with all three cogs and the watches on them turning in unison. It’s mesmerising.

There’s an LCD display on the back and a remote control for changing the various settings, but honestly the UNICO feels like it should be hand cranked. Sure, the lack of a box means dust can get to the watches, but the unobstructed view is worth it, especially if you have a Royal Oak-level bracelet.

Nothing says high performance quite like carbon fibre, the material de choix of hypercar designers and adrenaline junkies the world over. Or in this case, arguably the UK’s most innovative creator of avant garde watch winders. While the Formula Duo doesn’t have quite the same visual impact as, say, Rapport’s Time Capsule, it’s a good deal more practical and, let’s be honest, accessible – and I mean that in both price and style.

The regular pattern of the carbon fibre will suit most modern interiors nicely. Lined with soft velvet and equipped with an LCD screen to adjust not only the winders but the interior lighting, you can choose how you display your perfect pairing of, ideally, modern racing chronographs. And of course, you can lock it. After all, for everyone bar you, looking is better than touching.

Custom watch and jewellery specialist MJJ Exclusive know what their clientele need and apparently it’s a (up to) 12 watch winder surrounded by a sleekly designed, heavy-duty sheet of armour. Hard and impenetrable as the outside is though, the inside is lined with sumptuous quilted leather straight out of the nearest Roller. Tech-wise, this safe has it all.

While this intense watch winder might well look like a cross-section of the next land speed record holder, it’s aerodynamic shape is more sculptural than practical. That said, the fourth generation of Modalo’s incredible Sport winder pushes the technical envelope, with a fingerprint lock, touch screen display and the kind of ease of use you would expect from any decent dashboard.

Designed for four watches – with plenty of space between them for the perfect aesthetic display – it’s specifically kitted out to hold heavy timepieces, meaning big, chunky chronographs with equally macho bracelets. It’s definitely not the kind of watch winder meant to blend into the background; this is a tour de force more unmissable than a blacked-out Lamborghini.

Their philosophy is really start as you mean to go on and that can’t be clearer than when you approach their manufacture outside of Munich. You are immediately greeted by the building’s façade which houses a 12m high precision pendulum clock with an enormous 8m pendulum, swinging slowly back and forth with the inexorable march of time. It’s the largest precision pendulum clock in the world and you can’t make a bigger statement than that.

Stepping inside you’ll find a world of exotic and highly precise timepieces ranging from pendulum clocks that are accurate to within 1-2 seconds per month to marine chronometers mounted on rotating gimbles to wall size watch winders that can house up to 60 wristwatches at a single time. Most of which can also be found for sale on their website to some degree. It’s a connoisseur’s dream.

All this is made possible by Erwin Sattler’s understanding that they are creating artefacts that are designed to outlive them, multi-generational heirlooms that need to operate with the same amount of accuracy for decades. Their larger timepieces use brass plates 5mm thick to provide excellent sturdiness and create the groundwork for longevity with 90% of all Erwin Sattler production completed in-house.

But while Erwin Sattler are perhaps best known for their handmade clocks – pendulum, table or otherwise – they also have a small collection of wristwatches that they describe as pendulum clocks for on the go. As you might expect, they have a penchant for regulator complications, a function that separates the hour, minute and second hands onto individual dials to allow for precision time reading. It’s a complication that allows you to accurately set the time of a second timepiece, such as… a pendulum clock perhaps.

Nowadays pendulum and table clocks seem a bit archaic and are no longer the essential piece of furniture they used to be, so the argument could be made that Erwin Sattler are slightly out of touch. However, their designs are chic and modern with open work cases and dials showing the inner workings of their mechanisms and captivating the eye, keeping them relevant and exciting.

They’re more than simple nostalgia trips and are serious centrepiece artworks. Not to mention the precision pendulum clocks can be fitted with safes and watch winders to make them a totem of luxury within your home. There’s also the added benefit that every timepiece created by Erwin Sattler is highly exclusive because they are produced in limited series due to the handcrafting process.
