The Italians might not have much in the way of actual watchmaking nowadays, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a creative splash. Big, bold designs are pretty much par for the course there… but even by those standards, Meccaniche Veloci is something else entirely. In short, you won’t have seen anything like this before.

Inspired by performance cars and, more particularly, their engines, Meccaniche Veloci watches are some of the most out-there, inventive pieces of wrist candy you can find. Each piece looks like four watches in one, with the various dials linked to a single movement at its core.

Each of the dials can be set independently from one another using the signature set of crowns. This means that they work as second time zone indicators, albeit on an entire dial rather than a single extra hand.

That’s no mean feat; there’s a good reason it’s never been done elsewhere. It meant coming at watchmaking from an entirely new angle, approaching it not as traditional haute horology but as an engineering project. With a combination of Italian creativity and Swiss craftsmanship they managed – and the results speak for themselves.

As well as the striking mechanics behind the quadrilogy of dials, the looks of Meccaniche Veloci watches are just as eye-catching. For one, the set of four crowns creates an unmistakable silhouette; for another, the different dials allow for some serious creative flourishes, whether that’s different colours, embellishments or materials.

Attention to detail is, as you’d expect from a haute horology brand worth the name, second-to-none. Expect engine-turning, open-worked dials and plenty of carbon fibre, revving up the automotive design inspiration to the next gear. Even their signature bidirectional winding rotor is a petrol-laced sight to behold. If you’re after something shy and retiring, this is not the watchmaker for you.

If however you long for something that will get noticed, a watch that fellow collectors won’t be able to help but stop and stare at – then look no further than Meccaniche Veloci.
