Launched back in 2018, the Overseas is Vacheron Constantin’s answer to the confusing term ‘sports elegance.’ On the one hand it has all the traditional horological expertise of the world’s longest-running manufacture; on the other, the cool, sporty look and signature bezel aren’t exactly traditional.
The latest interpretation of the Overseas lives up to the collection’s name with the most useful of traveller’s complications and a new, darker livery: The Overseas Dual Time Black.
A much more practical take on the Overseas when compared to the rose gold set, the 41mm stainless steel case is as rugged as it is elegant. Whereas the previous version of this watch used nautically-slanted blue and white to indicate the time zones at home and away, this new version instead opts for black and white with hint of red. The result is a much more legible dial and more easily readable second time zone hand and AM / PM indicator.
The ensemble is powered by Vacheron’s 5110 DT calibre automatic movement with it’s impressive 60-hour power reserve. It’s a movement worth looking at, which you can go through the sapphire caseback. Leaning into the whole globetrotting vibe, the gold rotor has been made to imitate a wind rose.
The new watch isn’t exactly a ground-breaking advancement; it’s just a new dial on a key Overseas model. But as we’ve said before, a simple change of colour makes a world of difference and here, with it’s new, sportier personality, it’s a pretty perfect palette swap. The term ‘sports elegance’ may still be a frustrating one, but it’s hard to deny that Vacheron Constantin is nailing it.
