Let’s be honest for a moment, while we watch enthusiasts know the difference between a Glashütte Orignal and a Nomos Glashütte, there is a huge population of people who don’t know that Glashütte is even a place in the real world. When it comes to genuine household names of the watch industry, the brands regular people are the most familiar with, you have Rolex and then really it jumps to the likes of Seiko, Tissot and Timex. Not without good reason, these accessible brands are more widely available and easier to get hold of. Timex in particular are celebrating this fact with the new £1 Waterbury Watch.
That’s right, The Waterbury Watch costs just £1. It’s a limited edition of 1,000 pieces being produced in honour of Timex’s 170th anniversary (founded in 1854). The £1 price tag is a tribute to one of Timex’s earliest successes, back when they were known as The Waterbury Clock Company, the Yankee dollar pocket watch. It was a pocket watch that was sold for just $1 and made timekeeping accessible to everyone, not just the elite. Over 6 million Yankee pocket watches were sold, showing that there was a major appetite for accessible, reliable mass market timepieces, something that the eventual Timex evidently took to heart.
The dial of the £1 Waterbury Watch pays tribute to the Yankee in a more direct fashion. It has the same white display with black Roman numerals, although the moderns watch has a bolder, more legible typeface. Plus, it moves the seconds from a subdial to the central handstack and adds a day-date function at 3 o’clock. Then at 6 o’clock is the Timex 170th anniversary logo, which is also found on the closed caseback.
At time of writing Timex have not announced the calibre of the watch housed inside the 40mm case. However, at £1 it’s a bargain whatever the specs so that’s not really an issue. When the choice is an entire wristwatch or only 2-3 Freddos (depending on the shop), it’s a bit of a no brainer. In the UK the Timex £1 Waterbury Watch will be available to buy on November 16th at 10:00 online and in-store at Frasers Meadowhall. Watches will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis meaning they’re likely to sell out fast.
